Doran is working to refurbish the filter system at the Britannia Water Purification Plant initially constructed in the late 1950s. The filter system uses a complex layer of media including gravel, sand, and anthracite (carbon) whereby the water gravity drains through the media and subsequently treated and distributed for use throughout the city.

Doran is performing the phased removal of the old media, repairing the concrete filter pools, upgrading the backwash and under-drain system, and installing new filter media. Also included is the demolition and replacement of much of the industrial piping, valves, sluice gates, industrial blowers (for backwash), and control systems involved to process and distribute the filtered water. The testing and commissioning of all systems is required at the end of each filter rehabilitation prior to reconnection to the city water supply.

The replacement of old elevated walkways, railings, access hatches and stairs is also included in the project along with the installation of a new storage building.
